Marinette Materna

Marinette Materna is an aspiring illustrator, cartoonist, animator, character designer, storyboard artist, poet and author, based in London. She uses her work for storytelling, expressing herself through autobiographical illustrations and creating narratives with underlying themes such as love, despair, LGBTQ+ identities and pop-cultural references.

Materna uses Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro to simultaneously create printed illustrations and animated films, all of whom can be recognised by ladybug designs, which she uses as her trademark. Materna explores various fields of illustration, constantly improving her skills in poetry, picture books, animation and storyboarding. As a trans woman, Materna aims to re-introduce the badly misrepresented trans themes to wider audience, while also including other minorities.

Her goal is to create a space for youth to make them feel safe, with a diversity of characters and variety of different races, gender identities, sexualities, disabilities and health conditions. A fan of cartoons, poetry and Mariah Carey's music, Materna creates her own interpretations of "happily ever after" love stories by escaping from white, heterosexual stereotypes and replacing them with social groups, who generally lack representation in the media. She uses her creativity in art and creative writing, and combines the two abilities in order to create her own, often autobiographical stories, and bring them to life.
